The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) offers grade 11 and 12 students, who are at least 15 years of age, an opportunity to explore a skilled trade and begin an apprenticeship while completing credits towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Through the Co-operative Education program, OYAP provides students with on-site work experience and a realistic opportunity to become registered as an apprentice with a willing employer. Students can participate in work placements in any of the 144
trades, in either full or half-day placements.
Shannon McLeod is a skilled furniture maker, carpenter, and dedicated educator. She serves as a Central OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) Teacher with the TDSB, where she plays a vital role in guiding students toward careers in the skilled
trades. Through her work, Shannon supports students in accessing co-op placements, obtaining safety certifications like Working at Heights, and navigating the apprenticeship registration process.
With a strong background in hands-on craftsmanship, Shannon brings real-world experience to her teaching, inspiring students to explore opportunities in construction and related trades. She is also a key contact for teachers and guidance counselors seeking resources to promote apprenticeship pathways within TDSB schools.
Shannon can be reached at shannon.mcleod@tdsb.on.ca for inquiries related to OYAP programming, student support, or apprenticeship resources.
Sonja Melconian has been a teacher at York Mills for over two decades. Originally an English teacher, she also taught ESL and was a Guidance Counsellor. Since joining the Co-Operative Education department in 2018, she has enjoyed the opportunity to help
students create pathways to their post-secondary goals.
