As a new council member, it may feel like there’s a lot to take in but rest assured, other council members have either been there themselves or are also learning the ropes. The best way to learn is through active involvement, and returning council members are here to support you along the way.
Please review the key resources, and if anything isn’t clear or you need further explanation, don’t hesitate to reach out to the co-chair or another council member. Much of the learning comes through experience. Returning members will try to provide the needed context for each new matter as it arises to help our new members. And please don't be shy about asking questions. Any question you have can help council improve this on-boarding process for future members.
In previous years, some of our most active and engaged voting members were completely new to school councils—and even the country! They contributed significantly, from helping to develop strategy, taking on leadership roles, advising on grant applications to participating in every council event. Your perspective is valuable. We encourage you to dive in and look forward to working with you to support YM!
Add the council meeting dates to your calendar. Please remember that council members should attend all meetings.
Here are some essential resources to help you familiarize yourself with the roles and responsibilities of council members and council operations. Please take a moment to review the following:
Toronto Parent Involvement Advisory Committee (PIAC): Go to the School Councils area of the website for essentials about roles and responsibilities and council operations.
PIAC Toolkit: Excellent resource for new council members.
School Councils: A Guide for Members by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Video on School Council Operations by the PCCEO Office. Their Youtube channel offers a variety of past videos for school council co-chairs, running effective meetings, etc. Additionally, each fall, the PCCEO Office hosts live virtual training sessions for new school council co-chairs, treasurers, and members (check back if the schedule is not up yet).
GTA School Councils Facebook group: This is an informal public group where council members and other parents and caregivers from GTA schools can ask questions related to council work, get ideas, and share resources and practical experiences. There are often trustees and representatives from PCCEO and PIAC in the group.
